No, you need quota to sell milk in Alberta.

Why is that? Well, there’s a few reasons:

  1. Our licenced farms have to follow rigorous standards on their farms. They all must follow our proAction standards and have third-party validators visit their farm. If they do not meet our standards for milk quality or animal care, then we do not pick up their milk. We cannot guarantee those same standards from farms that do not have a license issued by Alberta Milk and quota on which to ship milk.
  2. Quota is an integral part of our supply management system. It ensures that the needs of Canadians are met. If only some farms used quota, our supply managed system wouldn’t function effectively and there would likely be an increase in wasted milk. Quota helps us balance the supply and demand for dairy products in Canada and ensures that milk isn’t just dumped if there is no market.
