Whole Wheat French Toast Sticks

1 cup (250 ml) 2% milk
1/4 cup (60 ml) 35% whipping cream
5 (large) eggs, beaten
2 tbsp (30 ml) brown sugar
1 tsp (5 ml) cinnamon
1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract
1/2 tsp (2 ml) salt, approximately
12 slices whole wheat bread (day old)
1/4 cup (60 ml) butter
Maple syrup


  1. Cut each bread slice into 4 sticks; set aside. Whisk milk with cream, eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt in a shallow dish.
  2. Melt half the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Dip bread sticks in batches and add to skillet; cook for 1 to 2 minutes per side or until golden brown adding remaining butter as necessary.
  3. Hold prepared French toast sticks in a warm oven 200°F (100°C) until ready to serve. Serve with maple syrup.
