Nothing compares to the smell of freshly baked bread straight from the oven. However, many people shy away from baking because they don’t have time for kneading and letting the dough rise. If this sounds like you, these light-as-air cheddar chive popovers are the perfect way for you to enjoy that fresh-baked flavour without the prep time of regular bread.
Popovers are a light and airy bun made from simple ingredients: milk, eggs, flour, salt and butter. Preparation is a breeze, with all ingredients mixed in a blender (no kneading here!). By heating up the muffin pan for a few minutes before adding the batter, you can ensure that the popovers reach maximum height while baking.
While this recipe combines chives and Canadian cheddar for a savoury kick, it’s easy to change up the flavour to suit your personal preference. Here are two simple variations to try:
- Sweet Popovers: Omit the cheddar and chives. Bake as directed. Serve with freshly whipped cream and berries.
- Herbed Popovers: Instead of cheddar and chives, add 1 ½ tsp (7 ml) of your favourite dried herbs, like oregano, thyme and basil.
Wondering how to serve these flaky cheddar popovers? Have two buns with a piece of fruit and a glass of milk for a well-rounded breakfast, or serve as a side dish with a stew or soup. Try pairing with Beef Stew or Oven-Roasted Cauliflower Soup for a hearty meal that’s sure to impress!
