Health Canada does not include almond beverage as an alternative to cow’s milk in Canada’s Food Guide. This is because almond milk does not contain the same amount of protein as cow’s milk. One cup (250 ml) of cow’s milk contains nine grams of protein, whereas the same amount of almond beverage contains only one gram of protein. Canada’s Food Guide recommends that children ages 2-8 years of age drink two cups of milk per day to meet their nutrient requirements. For more information on feeding young children, please see the handout Feeding Children ages 2-5
