Honoring the Past
Harvey Van Hierden grew up on the family dairy farm just east of Fort Macleod. After marrying Bernita (who grew up on a dairy farm in Chilliwack, BC), Harvey purchased property on Pearce Road, which had been the site of the RCAF Aerodrome Pearce, a second world war training air station of the British Commonwealth. Here they began dairy farming in 1984 and in honor of the history of the site, name the farm Airport Dairy.
A Family Affair
Harvey and Bernita raised their six children on the family farm. They began their dairy milking 50 cows and growing much of their own feed. Over the years they have expanded their farming operation to include grain and oilseed farming and in 2016 built a new dairy barn for their herd which has grown to 120 cows.
Two of Harvey’s sons, Doug and Brendan, are now part of the team at Airport Dairy. In addition to working for Airport Dairy, they each have their own farming entities, also doing custom spraying and silaging. Doug is married to Amanda, and they have three children, Lucas, Sadie and Joel, who are often seen in the barn and around the farm, enjoying family farm life.
