It’s always nice to meet up with a friend for a coffee. But, if you’re like me and don’t actually like the taste of coffee, the hot drink usually ends up being tea or hot chocolate. That was until a few years ago when I discovered milk steamers! Any coffee shop can make you a milk steamer, whether it’s on their menu or not.
It’s a pretty basic recipe – milk mixed with a flavoured syrup (I’ve tried everything from caramel and vanilla to banana!) and then steamed until it’s hot and frothy. One coffee shop by our office has over 20 syrup flavours – buttered rum is next on my list of flavours to try!
How to Froth Your Milk
You can make a milk steamer at home by just heating milk in the microwave, but it you want it to be really frothy, try this tip from a fellow Dairy Diva. Run your milk through a single serve blender or froth it with a milk frother or immersion blender before you heat it up. The air in the milk expands in the microwave giving it that perfect texture that we all desire! Just make sure your mug is big enough so your milk doesn’t overflow when it’s heating.
You can buy flavoured syrups pretty much anywhere. But it’s also pretty easy to make your own. Just make a simple syrup (1:1 ratio of water and sugar) and add in the flavouring you want. I chose to do vanilla because it’s easy – all you do is add some vanilla beans (or extract). You can make as much or as little syrup as you want and store it in the fridge in an air tight container for weeks!
Whether you are hitting up the coffee shops this winter or cozying up at home with a good movie or book, a milk steamer is the perfect addition to your evening. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! If you have the recipe for another kind of syrup, please share it with us!
