Whether you’re curling up on the couch for a Netflix marathon or enjoying the company of good friends, who doesn’t love snacking on a bowl of popcorn? There are so many choices for how to pop it – air popper, oil popper, microwave popcorn. But did you know the easiest way to pop your corn is just by using a brown paper bag?

4 Easy Steps

1. Put about ¼ cup of kernels into a plain old brown paper bag.

2. Fold the top over a couple of times to close it up.

3. Lie the bag on its side in the microwave.

4. Push start and in about 2.5 minutes and an easy, healthy snack will be waiting for you.

(Note that you have to listen to your popcorn while it pops – once the popping slows to have about 4 seconds in between each pop, it’s time to hit the stop button.)

Cheese, Please!

You probably already enjoy classic popcorn with delicious melted butter and a sprinkle of salt, but have you ever tried topping your popcorn with parmesan cheese instead? You get a different taste, but still have that salty finish on the corn. Pair your parmesan popcorn with a glass of chocolate milk and savour that delicious sweet and salty combination that we all seem to love!

Parmesan Popcorn

1/4 cup (60 ml) popcorn kernels
1 tbsp (15 ml) unsalted butter, melted
2 tbsp (30 ml) grated parmesan cheese


  1. Pour popcorn kernels into the bottom of a brown paper bag. Fold the top of the bag over a couple of times.
  2. Lie the bag on its side in the microwave and turn it on for about 2.4 minutes. Be sure to listen to the popcorn- when the popping slows to about 4 seconds between pops, the corn is done. Pour popcorn into a bowl for serving (or enjoy it right out of the bag!).
  3. Drizzle butter over the popcorn and shake to mix. Top with grated parmesan cheese and enjoy with a glass of chocolate milk!
