I remember, as a kid, enjoying ice cream treats during the summer, purchased either from the store or from the ice-cream truck. Being a chocolate lover, I would always go for the fudgesicles, which I still do to this day.

Feeling nostalgic, I decided to take a trip down the ice cream aisle of the grocery store on a quest to find a fudgesicle made with real ingredients—you know, milk, cream, cocoa, sugar—only to find that there wasn’t one. Every single packaged fudgesicle that I came across contained ingredients such as corn syrup, palm oil, tricalcium phosphate, cellulose gum, guar gum, malt powder, and carrageenan.

Being that I am a health-conscious Mom, not to mention a Registered Dietitian, I wasn’t impressed—even if it was a treat. Considering the less-than-impressive selection at the store, I decided to make my own fudgesicles with some healthy ingredients that I had at home. After three attempts and lots of taste-testing, I found the perfect combination of ingredients to make a smooth, creamy and delicious fudgesicle, with just enough sweetness. As a bonus, we had some leftover fudgesicle mixture in the blender after filling our popsicle molds, which made a delicious chocolate pudding!

Although I didn’t hide the fact that there were avocados and bananas in these healthy treats, my husband had no idea that they were in there. My father-in-law polished one off in less than 5 minutes and my three-year-old son was covered in melted chocolatey goodness in no time. These summer treats (that could easily pass as a snack) have become a favourite in our house—one that I feel good about eating and serving to my family. Creamy Avocado and Banana Fudgesicles

8 servings (depending on popsicle molds)


1 cup (250 ml) vanilla Greek yogurt
1/2 cup (125 ml) whole milk (you could use 1 or 2% instead)
1 (large) avocado (flesh off)
2 (ripe) bananas
1/4 cup + 1 tbsp (75 ml) cocoa
1/3 cup (75 ml) white sugar (depending on how sweet you like it)
1 tbsp (15 ml) pure vanilla
2-3 fresh raspberries per fudgesicle (optional)


  1. Put all ingredients into a food processor or really good blender and blend until very smooth (you may have to add more milk if mixture isn’t blending well).
  2. Pour mixture into your fudgesicle (or popsicle) molds (here’s where you can add fresh raspberries into each fudgesicle if you’d like), and prepare according to your mold’s instructions. Insert popsicle sticks into each one and freeze for at least 4 hours or until fudgesicles are set.
  3. To release the fudgesicles from the molds, carefully run the outside of the molds under warm water and gently take them out.
  4. Keep covered in the freezer until serving.
