As of June 1, all milk and cream containers produced in Alberta will be subject to refundable deposits and recycling fees. Only containers sold after June 1, bearing the red “Alberta deposit” stamp, are affected. Ready-to-serve beverage containers in excess of 30 ml containing fluid milk, cream, whipping creams, buttermilk, Milk2Go, drinkable yogurt, and meal replacement drinks are included in the deposit. Not included are infant formula, non-dairy coffee creamers and non-drinkable semi-fluids such as yogurt sold in tubes and pop packs.
A deposit of 10 cents will be applied to 1L containers and smaller, while larger containers will have a deposit of 25 cents. A non-refundable recycling fee of one to four cents will also be applied. These containers can be rinsed and returned to bottle depots to reclaim the deposit.
Alberta Milk has always strongly supported the recycling of dairy containers and we hope that this new Alberta Environment program will increase the number of containers recycled.
